A Great Place to Start, A Great
Place to Stay
Bounty of Oregon
(OREGON) – The appealing natural environment of Oregon is evident
throughout its regions. Stunning mountains, fertile valleys,
rugged coast, river beds and interior desert, all provide natural
playgrounds for residents and visitors alike. The northwest city
of Portland is the state’s largest metropolitan area and is home
to its biggest airport.
If you are starting an exploration of Oregon, chances are you
will land in Portland and either will gather up your rental car
for further voyages or catch a commuter flight to the southern
cities of Salem, Eugene, or Medford near the California border.
Even if your ultimate destination is farther a field, spending
a few days in Portland is well worth the effort (or since the
city makes it so easy -- lack thereof). While the major wine
regions of Oregon start just south of Portland with the verdant
Willamette Valley, the city itself hosts a couple of wineries
that you should visit.
Portland Wineries:
Regardless of whether you are “with it,” or “out of it,” male
or female, you should visit Hip Chicks do Wine. Started
by a wine goddess and a wine maven, this unique winery is situated
in an industrial area that is also populated by other artisans.
They produce wine with humor (as well as technique), as is evidenced
by this description of one of our favorite white varieties:
Shardoneaux:100% barrel aged 2000 Willamette
Valley Chardonnay, but…Caution! This is not your mother’s chardonnay!
Surfing on a pineapple off the coast of Florida-Tropical with
hints of citrus and bright! Swirl and sip this wine with your
sister, brother, or crustacean of your liking.
Hip Chicks do Wine Winery and Tasting Room, 4510 SE 23rd Avenue,
Portland, OR 97202 Open
to Public. Hours: 11am - 6pm daily
Urban WineWorks is the place in Portland to taste Bishop
Creek Cellars wines. They didn’t think their customers “should
have to travel an hour just to sample our wares. So we brought
the tasting room, the wine shop, and even a bit of the winery,
to Portland, to be more convenient for our customers.”
Not only is it convenient, but it is colorful and informative
(as well as tasty) when it comes to wine exploration. Visitors
enjoy its painted wine casks, each by separate local artists,
and the opportunity to take classes, such as: Blend Your Own
Wine, Build Your Own Cellar, and Beyond the Cork (aka Wine 101).
